Bow Thruster System and Installation: Precision Maneuvering, Maximum Control

Maneuvering a large vessel in confined spaces such as harbors, docks, or during slow-speed operations requires enhanced control beyond what the main propulsion and rudder can offer. That’s where the Bow Thruster System comes in. At Serden Ship Supply Marine Electric & Electronics Ltd., we specialize in the supply, installation, integration, and maintenance of bow thruster systems for vessels of all types and sizes.

Whether you're outfitting a newbuild or upgrading an existing ship, our bow thruster solutions ensure precise lateral control, better berthing performance, and greater safety during navigation.

What is a Bow Thruster System?

A bow thruster is a transversal propulsion device located at the bow (front) of the ship, used to move the vessel sideways without forward motion. It works independently of the main propulsion and is controlled from the bridge using:

  • Joystick controls

  • Remote or touchscreen interfaces

  • Integrated autopilot/positioning systems

Bow thrusters are essential for:

  • Docking and undocking

  • Operating in narrow channels

  • Wind/current compensation

  • Station-keeping and DP (Dynamic Positioning) operations

Types of Bow Thruster Systems We Install

We offer complete support for all major bow thruster types, including:

1. Electric Bow Thrusters

  • Driven by AC or DC electric motors

  • Low noise and low maintenance

  • Suitable for yachts, smaller vessels, and battery-supported ships

2. Hydraulic Bow Thrusters

  • Driven by hydraulic pumps powered by engine PTO or electric motor

  • High torque and continuous operation

  • Ideal for workboats, tugs, and commercial vessels

3. Tunnel Thrusters

  • Installed within a tunnel through the bow of the hull

  • Common in all vessel types

4. Retractable/Rotating Thrusters

  • Retract into the hull when not in use

  • Allow for 360° maneuvering

  • Used in DP vessels, offshore ships, and superyachts

 What’s Included in Our Scope?

At Serden, we provide turnkey solutions, including:

  • Bow thruster unit (propeller + housing)

  • Electric or hydraulic drive system

  • Control panels and bridge interface

  • Motor starters and frequency inverters (VFDs)

  • Hydraulic power packs (for hydraulic systems)

  • Cabling, piping, and tunnel cutting/fabrication

  • Integration with existing control and automation systems

 Installation Services

We offer both newbuild and retrofit installations, carried out by our experienced onboard engineering teams. Our services include:

  • Site inspection and hull structural assessment

  • Detailed engineering design and CAD drawings

  • Tunnel welding and structural reinforcement

  • Power system sizing and integration

  • Installation of thruster unit, control panels, cabling, and piping

  • Commissioning, testing, and crew training

  • Class documentation and compliance support

All installations follow IMO, SOLAS, IEC, and IACS standards.

 Control Options and Features

We offer a range of control options:

  • Joystick or lever-based bridge controls

  • Touchscreen HMI interface

  • Integration with Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems

  • Alarm and safety interlocks

  • Thruster load monitoring

  • Position feedback and indicator lights

  • Emergency override systems

Modern thruster systems can also be remotely monitored and integrated with VMS or AMS platforms for smarter navigation.
